University department. 1909. By Sir George Oatley. Coursed red
Pennant rubble with limestone ashlar and dressings, lateral
stacks and Cornish slate roof. L-shaped double-depth plan.
Collegiate Tudor Gothic Revival style.
Irregular series of stepped blocks, with moulded plinth,
strings, cornice with carved heads and corner gargoyles, and
crenellated parapet. Left-hand 3 storeys; 3:1:3 windows
separated by buttresses, wide mullion and transom windows;
left-hand block has a small Arts and Crafts style slate-hung
gable to roof with swept eaves and small leaded dormers. To
the right is a 2-story canted bay with a parapet.
To the right is a 2-stage entrance tower set in the re-entrant
with a wing extending back, has clasping buttresses with
panelled tops; a projecting ashlar doorcase has an
elliptical-arched doorway with a studded oak 2-leaf door,
under a 2-centred arched window with cusped blind spandrels.
Above is a canted 3-light 2-storey oriel with a moulded base,
ogee heads and ashlar tracery panel, and blind tracery
parapet. Elliptical-arched cross window to the top beneath a
band of quatrefoils and cornice with carved heads, and a
carved panel with a shield in stepped crenellations.
To the right is a 3-sided 2 storey bay in a re-entrant beneath
a square stair turret. Right-hand wing extends back, a
6-window range, the right half broken forward.
INTERIOR: entrance hall has 2-centred arches with panelled
soffits; 3 facing arches to stairs and central lift.
