Poulan 25 cc trimmers, like the Poulan Pro PP025, are designed for yard work that's more demanding than simply edging the lawn. Featuring a wide, 17-inch cutting path, the 25 cc Poulan features a split curved shaft that will also accept attachments, including a cultivator, brush cutter and edger. Over time, issues may develop that prevent the Poulan from starting properly. Some basic troubleshooting will often identify and correct the starting issue.

Fuel

The Poulan 25 cc trimmer features a two-cycle engine that requires a fuel mixture of two-cycle engine oil and gasoline to both lubricate and power the engine. It is important to mix the oil and gasoline together properly, using the correct types of oil and gas. To begin, measure 3.2 ounces of 40:1 ratio two-cycle engine oil in a measuring cup and pour it into a 1 gallon fuel container. Add 1 cup or so of gasoline, minimum 87 octane, to the container. Cover the container and shake to mix the oil and gas together. Finish filling the container to the 1 gallon mark, cover and shake again. Pour the properly mixed fuel into the tank on the Poulan trimmer.

Starting

Always follow the recommended procedure when starting the Poulan trimmer. Understand that when the engine is flooded, it will not start. A flooded engine happens when too much fuel mixture enters the carburetor and floods it to the point that proper ignition cannot take place. Starting a flooded engine requires that the starting lever be place in the 'Run' position. After that, depress and hold down the trigger throttle and pull the starter rope repeatedly. Don't give up as it may take several pulls on the starter rope to purge the excessive fuel from the carburetor. Stay with it and continue pulling until the Poulan's engine starts.

Fuel Filter

The fuel filter on a Poulan 25 cc trimmer is inside the fuel tank on the end of the fuel line that runs to the carburetor. A fuel filter is designed to filter the fuel mixture and prevent contaminants from traveling to the carburetor and engine, where they could cause damage. Drain any fuel in the Poulan trimmer into a container. Reach down into the fuel tank, with a pair of needle-nose pliers, if necessary, and carefully pull out the fuel filter. If the filter appears to be dirty and plugged with debris it needs to be replaced. Pull the dirty filter off the end of the fuel line and obtain a replacement filter from a mower or small engine repair shop. Slip the end of the fuel line onto the outlet on the bottom of the filter and place the filter down into the tank.

Spark plugs provide the spark that ignites the fuel combustion process in a two-cycle engine. A damaged or worn spark plug must be replaced. To access the plug, pull the rubber boot on the end of the spark plug off the tip of the spark plug. Use a spark plug wrench to turn the plug counterclockwise and remove it from the engine. Check the white ceramic body for cracks and damage. Look at the diode in the bottom center of the plug for damage, such as excessive scorching. In these cases, buy a replacement plug. If the plug only shows signs of carbon deposits, brush them away with a stiff bristle brush. Thread the cleaned or replacement plug back into the engine and tighten it with the spark plug wrench. You will then need to connect the spark plug wire back to the spark plug by replacing the cap.
